Thomas Toliver Goldsmith Jr. was born in Greenville, South Carolina, on 9 January He was the younger of two sons of the insurance and real estate broker Thomas Toliver Goldsmith Sr. (), son of Mary Jane Bozeman () and Charles Homer Goldsmith (), and Charlotte Broadus Manly-Goldsmith (), a concert pianist and Master of Music (), Bachelor of Arts () and Master of Arts () from Greenville Female College.
