Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi unveils the new logo of the Delhi Police on Friday

With whopping per cent rise in crime against women in Delhi last year portraying a dark picture, Delhi Police Commissioner Bhimsen Bassi on Friday announced a slew of measures, including filing of chargesheet within 20 days of the arrest of accused in rape cases.

In case the chargesheet is not filed within 20 days, the joint commissioner of police will be flagged with a notice; and if the chargesheet is not filed within 30 days from the date of arrest, the special commissioner of police will be served with a notice.

The Special Commissioner of Police (Crime) will tasked to further report the matter to the commissioner.

"To stop crime against women is our first priority. From now on, chargesheet in rape cases must be filed within 20 days," Bassi said during the annual press conference.

Though crime figures of last year clearly reflect tremendous increase in crime, the commissioner said that ensuring registration of cases has always been his priority.

"Needless to say, the process of providing justice to victim of a cognizable crime cannot begin unless an FIR is registered upon the complaint.

Let the crime figure go high. Our prime focus should be providing safety and addressing every complaint, and strict instructions have been given to police stations that people should not be turned away," Bassi added.

There has been about per cent increase in overall crimes in compared to , with 73, cases begin registered under the Indian Penal Code in against 51, in the previous year.

The commissioner said that the police could solve per cent of the cases.

According to the figures, there has been a steep rise in molestation cases from in to 3, in , a whopping increase of over per cent.
